AONest System of Support

This Indigenous-led, culturally grounded, and evidence-informed holistic framework guides Anishnabeg Outreach in all that we do. It addresses the interconnected causes and consequences of poor mental health, trauma, houselessness, substance use, family instability, unemployment and justice-system involvement.

This framework doesn’t act as a replacement, but a compliment to existing healthcare, housing, shelter, social-service and community systems. It provides an accessible layer of prevention, self-directed learning, cultural connection, and wrap-around support. By following the four-phase prosperity guideline, individuals can walk through our stages of Rebirth, Nurture, Growth, and Harvest to help lead them towards healing and long-term prosperity.

The System of Support can be broken down in these key pillars:

“Two-eyed” healing model

We combine evidence-based Western therapeutic modalities (i.e. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) with traditional Indigenous Knowledge, language, ceremony, and Elder-led land-based healing – key components of Indigenous Social Determinants of Health.

24/7 digital wellness software

AONest contains over 4,000 hours of evidence-based self-guided video lessons and practical worksheets that cover trauma recovery, grief, emotional regulation, spirit building, life skills, and more.

Connecting & healing

Ceremony, traditional medicines and land-based healing via our Elder-in-Residence Program and connection to Indigenous Knowledge Keepers.

Wraparound community supports

Our services at Anishnabeg Outreach – like our Spirit Bundle program, tutoring and sports programs, employment services, and more – are integrated practical elements of this process.

Awakening

We recognize the importance of supporting the supporters in one’s life – our Awakening module in AONest helps reduce burnout and promote resilience for frontline support workers and family caregivers.

Pipeline to Prosperity

Helping to reduce barriers in achieving economic reconciliation, like with our community bike and laptop loaning library and our Indigenous Housing model, based on the university roommate model of multiple individuals living together to save on rent.
